Banks Locking in Online Security

The number of Americans paying bills, monitoring account balances or handling other aspects of their banking life on the Internet has skyrocketed in recent years. About 40 million households -- accounting for almost one of every two U.S. bank and credit union accounts -- did at least some of their banking online last year, a figure that has nearly doubled since 2001.

The nation's financial institutions have noticed, moving quickly to tailor their services and adjust their Web sites to attract customers.

But the bad guys have noticed, too. Spyware, "phishing" scams and other forms of electronic fraud have exploded in recent years. Read more.
